Watch Kazuya Minekura Draw Saiyuki's Sanzo in 4.5 Hours
posted on by Eric Stimson
Next year is the 20th anniversary of Kazuya Minekura's manga version of Saiyuki. To honor the occasion, Chiba's Makuhari Messe convention center will hold the Saiyuki Festa 2017 ~Series Dai Genga-ten~ ("Great Series Original Art Exhibition"). As the name indicates, fans can see Minekura's rough drafts on display.
To whet appetites for the exhibit, the anniversary website has posted videos of Minekura drawing Sanzo. It takes a long, long time — 4 hours and 36 minutes. She starts with a pencil drawing (33 minutes), then moves on to a light table for tracing (up to the 1:52 mark). After some brief touching up, it's on to coloring... which takes up the rest of the videos' runtime.
If you're interested in seeing the final work, it will be on display at the Saiyuki Festa on January 7 and 8 at the Makuhari Messe Halls 4 and 5. The 20th anniversary of Saiyuki will also be honored with an anime adaptation of Saiyuki Reload Blast, Saiyuki's latest manga incarnation.
