Gen Urobuchi announced at the "Thunderbolt Fantasy Panel with Urobuchi Gen" panel at Sakura-Con in Seattle on Saturday that the previously revealed second season of the "chivalrous fantasy puppet show" Thunderbolt Fantasy will premiere in 2018.
Nitroplus had announced at AnimeJapan 2017 on March 25 that a video project separate from season 2 has also been green-lit.
The separate project is titled Thunderbolt Fantasy Shōshi Ikken. Thunderbolt Fantasy Shōshi Ikken will adapt the "Satsumushō-hen" (Shā Wú Shēng Chapter) story from the Thunderbolt Fantasy: Tōriken Kōki Gaiden (Thunderbolt Fantasy Side Story) novel that Nitroplus published on April 7. Thunderbolt Fantasy Shōshi Ikken will also adapt a new story about "Shōfukan" (Shāng Bù Huàn) written by Urobuchi. Nitroplus hasn't yet revealed what format the video adaptation will take (ie: TV, film, net series, etc.).
Urobuchi (Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass, Aldnoah.Zero) was credited with the first season's original work, and he also wrote the scripts and served as chief supervisor. Nitroplus was credited with the character designs, and Good Smile Company was credited as the "modeling adviser." PILI Multimedia Inc., a well-known hand puppet drama production company in Taiwan, produced the series. Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan, Aldnoah.Zero, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) composed the music and Yoshikazu Iwanami was the sound director. T.M. Revolution performed the theme song "Raimei."
The first 13-episode series premiered on July 8 in Japan, and Crunchyroll streamed the series outside of Asia.
