Not to burst your bubble...but studies are showing that children are becoming sexally active at a much younger age (like middle school). So chances are, they would know what a gigolo is and you just don't know it |
Out of curiosity, did Japanese kids already got to that point of becoming sexually active? |
hmm...I don't know if Japanese children are or not. I just know that reports are saying that it's something like 1 in 7 middle school aged kids are sexually active in the US. I don't know how true that is....but that's what some places are saying.

I heard somewhere recently that with every generation kids mature 6 months faster. Now, I can't remember where I heard it or even if it's correct, but it would explain some things if it is true. Oh, maybe it was on MSN...
*ten minutes later*
...oh, well, I couldn't find it. It's been awhile.

(I know that in the 2003 panel, we didn't really say 'kids over 6 should watch this.') Most likely the point was just that there isn't much for very little children but as they get older, there is a greater selection of titles for parents to choose from.
Considering we're talking about a panel that is well over a year old and a panel that is held every year at Otakon, I don't know why this is even being discussed. The panelists change every year (Pete is the only panelist that has remained on the panel over the years) so the opinions change every year. While there are things that are pretty 'absolute' (meaning: children shouldn't watch hentai or extreme graphic violence), there are things that aren't (what age a parent thinks their child can watch minor violence). |
It may well be over a year old but it's still prevalent here so why shouldn't it be discussed? It's all about credibility. I found this report whilst researching Magic Knight Rayearth, and any report that links parents to anime just naturally grabs my attention curiously. Since this panel is an annual event, perhaps this report should be updated with each one? BTW most child psycologists, who have studied these things, state that children shouldn't be exposed to certain things that an adult would take for granted, or would be able to make a judgement about, because very young children's brains just haven't developed enough to genually know the difference between fiction and non fiction no matter how it's exposed to them. To a child of 19 months, or a child of 6, it's all black and white, it's all literal. So one has to becareful what they are exposed to as it will effect their psycological development for the better, or worst.

Well, they wouldn't update that particular report because it's in the Otakon 2002 write-up. They would put a write-up of the panel in the appropriate year. (They didn't do a write-up on the 2003 panel, which is why it's not there.)

I'm a firm believer of explaining things to my child. I think child psychologiest are idiots for the most part. (I've been to enough of them who have no clue what they are talking about.) I know my child.....and I know what she can handle.

I've always wanted to give one of these pannels, but I don't have any kids so I probably wouldn't have a whole lot of credit to my presentation. Yeah, I could do it, but I doubt people would trust me without any first hand experience.
BTW, I'm inclined to agree with you on what kids can and can not handle, Cass. I remember growing up with my parents forcing me to watch horror movies before I could tie my own shoes. As far as I know I turned out to be somewhat normal. It seems to me what these so called specialists go on about is simply sheltering. If you don't sit down with a kid and show them this stuff and explaine to them that it isn't real then they're going to grow up even more afraid of it and even more convinced that it is real.
I remember a while back talking with some people about something similar to this topic. They basicly said that if I was showing a horror movie to kids I may as well be showing them porn too since neither are appropriate for kids and therefore one is just as bad as the other. I found that to be extremely ignorant, but oddly enough I found myself to be in the minority saying that there is a huge difference between the two.
To be honest, this is a debate that I just aw well avoid sometimes.

Basically, here's what I think: If the box says "Uncut," it says it for a reason. Most of the time, children under 12 don't need to see uncut Ninja Scroll or even DBZ(it's more violent than you think) Little Jimmy may get some funny ideas in his head if he watches Mahoromatic or Love Hina. Of course, it's really up to parents whether or not to bring kids to "Wrong Turn." Just know I'll be there to crack your skulls when your kids scream their brains out. And remember, Anime18 should not be viewed by children, the elderly, or small animals.
